Biographical Information

Randolph H. Lytton is a professor of European History at George Mason University. He received his Ph.D. at Pennsylvania State University in 1973. Lytton is a collector of Fairfax, Virginia, history, and this set of postcards comes from his personal collection.

Scope and Content

The Randolph H. Lytton historical postcards of Fairfax, Virginia, collection serves as a window on the not-so-distant past for the City of Fairfax, Virginia. This collection contains 206 black and white and color postcards with an average size of about 3 1/2 x 5 1/2". The postcard images consist of both photographs and drawings.

About half of the collection consists of various types of lodging, including hotels, motels, and motor lodges. Another quarter of the collection is made up of judicial buildings, and the remaining quarter is divided evenly among diners, businesses, schools, churches, and monuments. The collection spans the one hundred year period from the 1860s to the 1960s. It has been separated into two boxes containing three series.

The first series, spanning the 30 pages of the entire box one, depicts Fairfax places of lodging and residence. The second series spans the first 15 pages of box two; it portrays Fairfax government buildings, such as judicial buildings, monuments, schools, and churches. Finally, the third series contains images of diners, merchant businesses, and works of art. It spans the remaining six pages of box two.
