Manuscript, Photograph, Digitized, and Other Collections in Special Collections & Archives

Special Collections & Archives (SC&A) preserves and makes available more than one hundred collections in two main record groups: George Mason University Archives and Special Collections. University Archives comprises many series, organized by organizational unit, publication type, or publication title.  Special Collections contains many distinct collections of differing sizes, subjects, and scopes.  Special Collections feature manuscript, photography, and audiovisual materials pertaining, but not limited to: planned communities and city planning, transportation and travel, politics, northern Virginiana, and performing arts. SC&A also collects a number of rare and antiquarian books in support of its manuscript collections and the university's curriculum offerings.

List of individual research collections in SC&A

American Political Items Collectors Collection - contains scholarly material that relates to national political campaigns as well as American history dating from 1895 to 1982.

American Public Transportation Association (APTA) Collection - Materials pertaining to APTA's activities. Included are materials from both the American Transit Association (ATA) and the Institute for Rapid Transit (IRT).

American Theater Association Records - Official records of the American Theater Association such as meeting minutes, correspondence, and general administrative papers, 1972-1986.

Abraham Anson Papers - This collection contains materials relating to Anson's career in the field of photogrammetry and remote sensing, including publications, aerial photographs, working papers, lab notes, glass plate negatives, and slides.

Arena Stage Artistic Personnel Files - Collection contains head shots, resumes and brief biographies of artistic personnel at Arena Stage including actor, actress, set designers, directors, and lighting designers.

Arena Stage Audiovisual - Contains audiotape and videotape cassettes of Arena Stage and Living Stage performances.

Arena Stage Collection - One of the first resident theaters in the United States begun in 1949 in Washington,D.C.

Arena Stage Financial Documents and Projects - Financial documents produced by the Arena Stage between 1950-2000. Includes documents on budgets, marketing, royalties, grants and donation information.

Arena Stage Historical Documents - The Arena Stage historical documents contain materials from the early part of Arena Stage's history including photographs, slides, reports, papers, newspaper articles and reviews.

Ollie Atkins Photograph Collection - Contains negatives, photographs, and contact sheets dating from 1946-1974 which are representative of his work with The Saturday Evening Post and as photographer to President Nixon. Digital collecton of 1972 Nixon campaign images

Charles Baptie Photograph Collection - A Fairfax, Virgina photographer Baptie did photographic work for The Encyclopedia of United States History, Capital Airlines, Hazelton Labs, J. W. Marriot and Company and others.

Milton Barnes Papers - Two hundred items, mostly correspondence between Milton and Rhoda Barnes during the Civil War.

Jean-Louis Barrault Photograph Collection - contains photographs documenting Barrault and wife Madeleine Renuad's career in the theatre in France between 1947 and 1979.

David Bauer Papers - This collection contains original notes and a typed autobiography of Bauer's career at IBM from 1974-1995.

John C. Becher Soldier Show Collection - contains entertainment materials written by and for the United States military during and immediately following World War II.

Beverly A. Blois PAGE Program Research Papers - This collection contains research materials for Blois' 1987 dissertation on education, including audio cassettes of interviews with GMU faculty members and a first draft copy of his dissertation.

Bernard Brenner Brass Rubbings Collection - Consists of 157 brass rubbings from churches located throughout England.

Robert Breen Theater Collection (ANTA) - Documents the early beginnings of government support for the performing arts (theatre and dance) and the people responsible for them. Digital collection

Esther Brinch Cuban Revolution Documents Collection - This collection contains 12 documents on revolutionary Cuba from the library of Danish Communist Party activist Esther Brinch. Materials include pamphlets, manuscripts, telegrams, and plates.

Broadside Photograph Collection - Collection contains over two thousand photographs taken between 1975 and 1997 for Broadside, a George Mason University student newspaper..

Paul Brockman Papers - Papers of the former city councilman from Falls Church, Virginia, 1971-1976.

Joel Broyhill Papers - Documents pertaining to Joel Broyhill's career as a U.S. Congressman representing Virginia's 10th district, 1952-1974.

Burke Centre Conservator Newsletter - Collection documents the monthly activities of Burke Centre, such as elections, programs and festivals.

John W. Burton Papers - Materials pertaining to the creation of George Mason University's Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution (ICAR).

Jerry Clapsaddle Papers - This collection contains materials pertaining to Jerry Clapsaddle's career as a professor of art at George Mason University. Materials include annual reports, correspondence, slides, and videotapes.

Leonard H. Clark Military History Collection - Leonard H. Clark served in the U.S. Air Force from 1940 to 1968. The collection contains his military service records, correspondence, photographs, and memorabilia.

Nomen M. Cole, Jr. Papers - This collection covers his environmental work (particularly in the area of water pollution control and reclamation) in Northen Virginia and other areas in the Commonwealth.

Drew Nemser Conger George Mason College Collection - Contains newsclippings and photographs pertaining to the development of George Mason College.

E.P. Conkle Papers - Papers of E.P. Conkle, A prolific playwright in the 1930s and 1940s, his works include many published and unpublished plays.

Conklin and Rossant Reston Project Collection - Includes plans, reports, correspondence and brochures about Reston, Va. Also included are photographs, drawings and negatives which were used in the construction of Reston.

Tom Davis Papers - Contains issue files, legislative files, committee hearing files, thank-you letters, and constituent mail from his entire congressional career. There are also videotape cassettes, photographs, and many pieces of memorabilia. The collection will be closed to research until 2014.

Thomas Blackburn Deen Papers - Contain transportation-related materials which cover a wide variety of topics such as highway construction, safety, international transportation concerns, and funding for highways in the Washington, D.C. area.

Sam di Bonaventura Papers - Papers of Dr. Sam di Bonaventura (1921-1998), who was a professor of music at George Mason from 1975 until in 1998.

Christine Drennon European Lantern Slide Collection - This collection contains lantern slides with images and maps of European cities in France, the Netherlands, Germany, Sweden, and Italy.

Clive L. DuVal Papers - The papers are related to Senator DuVal's tenure in the Virginia General Assembly and include: correspondence, campaign materials, legislative files, press releases and constituents newsletters.

East German Culture Photograph and Poster Collection - Approximately 7,500 posters and 3,400 photographs that document film, theater, and politics dating from the late 1950s to early 1990s, including campaign posters and an archive of materials from the first free German election after the fall of the Wall in 1989. The bulk of the collection dates from the 1970s to the early 1990s.

Federal Theatre Project Collection - Materials which document the operation of the Federal Theatre Project (1935-1939): photographs, playscripts, posters, set and costume designs, artifacts, administrative papers. Digital collection of posters, playscripts, costume and set designs

Herbert Feis Papers - This collection contains research materials and correspondence of Herbert Feis, including 3 letters from Mrs. Feis to her husband's assistant, Arline Pratt.

Thomas C. Fichandler Papers - Contains correspondence, memos, reports and other papers created by Thomas C. Fichandler.

Zelda Fichandler Papers - This collection contains the working and personal papers of Zelda Fichandler. Items include correspondence regarding productions, staff, finances, playwrights and actors as well as personal matters and speeches and remarks given by Zelda.

Joseph L. Fisher Papers - Contains the papers of Joseph Lyman Fisher (1914-1992), economist, educator, author, and congressman.

Margaret W. Fisher Papers - This collection contains poetry written by Margaret Fisher, framed items, a masters thesis, postcards she had published featuring images of her watercolor paintings, memorabilia, and correspondence.

Joel Foreman Documentary Videotape Collection - This collection contains dozens of video and reel tapes produced by former George Mason University English Professor Joel Foreman.

Jay Bradford Fowler, Jr. Papers - A prolific and well-recognized poet, his poems have appeared in The American Poetry Review, America, Anthology of Magazine Verse & Yearbook of American Poetry, Bouillabaisse, The Classical Bulletin, Yankee, and Cosmic Trend.

French Communist Party Poster Collection - A substantial selection of posters from PCF archive in Paris. Topics include peace, human rights, civil rights, environment, anti-nuclear, pro-Cuba, pro-Soviet Union, and anti-America movements.

Cynthia Garn Film Production Collection - Collection comprises original film scripts, including "Colossus" by James Bridges and "Freud" by John Huston and Wolfgang Reinhardt. It also contains scrapbooks representing artistic design research compiled by Hecht-Hill-Lancaster for Universal Studios' 1957 production of George Bernard Shaw's "The Devil"s Disciple."

Joel Garreau Papers - Collection contains research materials pertaining to Garreau's books, "Edge City" (1992) and "The Nine Nations of North America" (1981).

George Mason University Archives - The official, permanent papers and historical documents of the University.

George Mason University Athletic Department Records - Collection contains information (mostly color press guides) relating to George Mason University athletic programs.

George Mason University Broadside Photograph Collection - The Broadside photograph collection contains over two thousand photographs taken between 1975 and 1997.

George Mason University Libraries Records - Collection includes materials and reports on library planning and operations as well as special projects, programs and events.

George Mason University Men's Basketball Collection - Collection contains news articals, tickets, flyer and other memorabilia from the 2006 NCAA Tournament.

George Mason University Oral History Program - The George Mason University Oral History Program records and preserves oral histories of members of the GMU community. Recordings of oral histories are available for use in SC&A's Reading Room.

George Mason University Plan for Alternative General Education Records - Collection contains photographs, PAGE publications, articles on PAGE, and correspondence within PAGE.

George Mason University Office of the President Records - Contains materials originating in or directed to the Office of the President and used in the University's business. Types of materials include memoranda, correspondence, studies, reports, speeches, meeting minutes, and calendars.

George Mason University Office of University Relations Presse Releases - Collection contains printed press releases from GMU Public Relations (later University Relations) unit.

Jonathan Gifford Transportation Collection - This collection contains tapes, documents, and books on transportation planning. Included is a VHS videotape of footage from 1919 on a US Army convoy traveling across the country on Lincoln Highway, the first transcontinental highway in America.

Paul Grinberg Reston Collection - Grinberg served as treasurer of Reston Incorporated in 1967. During that time Reston was in a transition period when the founder, Robert E. Simon, Jr., faced bankruptcy. The principal investor, Gulf Oil Corporation formed a subsidiary, Gulf Reston, Inc. in 1967 and took complete financial and operational control. Paul Grinberg created this collection during the period from the founding of Reston and concludes with the transfer of control.

Fred Grossberg Creative Writers' Workshop Collection - Collection contains videotapes, meeting minutes, and other documents pertaining to former George Mason University English Professor Fred Grossberg's involvement in the Creative Writers' Workshop.

Gulf Oil Reston Records - Papers that document the investment of $4 million from the Gulf Oil Corporation for the purpose of developing Reston, Virginia.

Alexander Haight Family Collection - Materials of the Haight family, who have lived in Northern Virginia since the 1840s, and who owned Sully Plantation during the Civil War. The collection includes journals, household records, military records, and photographs.

John R. Hamburg Transportation Papers - This collection contains papers from John Hamburg's career as a transportation planner. Hamburg specialized in urban transportation and worked on projects in Detroit, Chicago, Mexico City, Shanghai, and at the Baltimore-Washington International Airport.

Hugh Heclo Government Policy Collection - Heclo is a recognized expert on American democratic institutions as well as the international development of modern welfare states. Collection contains research materials relating to the Executive branch of the U.S. federal government. Several presidential administrations beginning with the 1932 Roosevelt Administration are represented.

Arthur Herman Papers - An historian and author, Herman wrote: How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World & Everything in It, Crown Publishing Corp (New York, NY) 2001. Joseph McCarthy: Reexamining the Life and Legacy of America's Most Hated Senator, Free Press (New York, NY), 2000. The Idea of Decline in Western History, Free Press (New York, NY), 1997, and To Rule the Waves: How the British Navy Shaped the Modern World.

Bernard G. Hoffman Ethnohistory Papers - This collection consists of ethnohistory manuscripts, including publications and research materials for the book Cabot to Cartier: Ethnohistory of Northeastern North America, 1497-1555.

Edith McChesney Ker Collection - The collection consists of more than 10,000 slides of wildlife, architecture and nature scenes from around the world, plus scrapbooks of Ker’s travel and personal diaries. 

John Jackson Sound Recordings Collection - This collection contains 5 long-playing records of Virginia blues singer John Jackson.

Claire Kincannon Theater Collection - Collection contains promotional materials for plays in the Washington, D.C. area, including programs, photographs, and press kits. This collection also holds a selection of programs and playbills from theaters in New York, London, and regional theaters in Ohio dating back to 1955, as well as some limited film-related materials.

Henry O. Lampe Papers - Papers of Henry Lampe, a member of the Northern Virginia Regional Planning Commission and General Assembly of Virginia, Virginia Metropolitan Areas Transportation Study Commission, White House Conference on Aging, president of the Northern Virginia Mental Health Association, and on the Board of Trustees at Arlington Hospital. He has also been on the Board of Visitors for George Mason University.

Virginia Lampe Papers - Papers of Virginia Lampe, who was a fixture in Republican politics in Virginia from 1960 to 1980.

Jean W. Landers  Collection - This collection contains around twenty hand-written letters from Jean W. Landers and others.

Larkin Family Photograph Collection - Collection contains dozens of family photographs from the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century, exhibiting a range of early photographic technology including albumen prints, tintypes and cyanotypes.

Clarence E. Larson Science and Technology Oral History Collection - Videotaped interviews conducted with famous scientists and figures in the history of technology of the twentieth century by Clarence E. Larson.

James H. Laue Papers - The papers of James Laue, member of the George Mason University faculty in the Institute for Conflict Analysis and Resolution.

Michael La Vean French Documents Collection - Collection contains 268 documents and books from the period between 1751 and 1851.

The League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area Collection - Papers of the League of Women Voters of the Fairfax Area (LWVFA). Collection contains materials from the LWVFA's history, including studies, information on political issues, meeting minutes, newsletters, correspondence, and photographs.

Carol D. Litchfield Microbiology Collection - Collection contains research materials belonging to George Mason Universtiy professor Carol D. Lichfield dealing with many different areas of microbiology, ranging from research methods and analysis to water quality data influencing policy making.

G. Ridgley Loux Papers - Contains records relating to commercial and residential development in Reston. The papers are from the Reston Community Association (RCA) Planning and Zoning Committee, Fairfax County Annual Plan Review Task Force, Reston Town Center Task Force, Fairfax Center Area Task Force, and other files on various issues relating to Reston projects.

Edwin M Lynch Vietnam War Protest Collection - Collection consists of a variety of materials relating to the Vietnamese Conflict including: pamphlets, booklets, correspondence, posters, reprint articles, newspaper clippings, various anti-war publications, and the minutes of meetings of several anti-war groups.

C. Harrison Mann, Jr. Papers - C. Harrison Mann, Jr was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1954 to 1970 and a founder of George Mason University. Digital collection of Manuscript papers / Digital collection of rare maps

Jean Marburg League of Women Voters Collection - Materials relate to the daily operations and special projects of the LWVFA during the period 1979-1985. Materials are representative of LWVFA's focus on many community, social, environmental, and political issues such as nuclear energy, hunger, defense, international development and trade to mention a few.

Chester H. McCall Papers - The papers of Chester McCall, Assistant Secretary of Commerce (1933-1937) under Daniel C. Roper in the Franklin D. Roosevelt Administration, contain materials both from his tenure at the Department of Commerce and private life.

Peter McCandless Papers - Contain material relating to Reston, Virginia. The majority of the documents are from the Reston Land Corporation and include correspondence, awards and gifts given to Reston, project reports, newsclippings, press releases, marketing and promotional material.

Colin F. McClare Papers - This collection contains revisions of a manuscript on biophysics as well as correspondence with George Mason University biology professor Harold Morowitz.

James J. McDonnell Transportation Collection - The McDonnell collection contains materials related to McDonnell's work on the Shirley Highway project and other materials from his work at the United States Bureau of Public Roads (BPR) and Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

Dorothy S. McDiarmid Papers - This collection contains material relating to Dorothy S. McDiarmid's career in the Virginia House of Delegates, including correspondence, printouts, publications, notes, subject files, and newsclippings.

Francis J. McNamara Collection - Collection contains materials pertaining to anticommunism from McNamara's employment at American Business Consultants, Inc., Veterans of Foreign Wars, House Committee on Un-American Activities Subversive Activities Control Board.

William Hugh McFarlane George Mason University History Collection - William Hugh McFarlane served as director of the Virginia State Council of Higher Education and later a member of the Mason faculty. The collection consists of correspondence, news clippings, reports, meeting minutes, speeches, and audiotape interviews pertaining to the history of George Mason University.

William L. Mertz Transportation Collection - Consists of documents and materials pertaining to the development of highways and urban transportation policy by William Lee Mertz, a former Federal Highway Administration official.

Eugenie Mielczarek Papers - Research notes and other papers of Dr. Eugenie Mielczarek, the first woman physicist on the George Mason Faculty, and a member of several important Mason faculty committees.

Emilie F. Miller Papers -  Emilie F. Miller is a local activist and former politician from the Northern Virginia area. The papers contain materials pertaining to her service in the Virginia State Legislature. Included in the collection are campaign material, subject files, bills and resolutions, correspondence, committee information, and constituent files.

Harold J. Morowitz Papers - Morowitz is a noted biophysicist and Robinson Professor in Biology and Natural Philosophy at George Mason University. He is the author of several books on the nature of life.

Motion Picture Press Kit Collection - Donated by George Mason University faculty members Peter Brunette and Maragaret Yocom, this collection contains press kits for major motion pictures.

Nan Netherton Reston History Collection - Contains northern Virginia Historian, Nan Netherton's research and notes from her book "Reston: A New Town in the Old Dominion: A Pictorial History" (1989).

William Nicoson Papers - Contains material on Reston redevelopment, mostly promotional. The collection includes maps, charts, publications, slides, and newsclippings. the collection also includes information on federal agencies, such as the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), a variety of regions in the United States, and several international new towns in France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

Richard Nixon Presidential Photograph Collection - The collection contains black-and-white and color photographs of President Richard M. Nixon, the Nixon family, staff, and visitors to the White House. The collection also documents his trips abroad and campaign activities.

Northern Virginia History Collection - Collection contains materials on the history of Northern Virginia, including "Northern Virginia Heritage," a GMU-sponsored local history journal from the 1980s, a few dozen issues of "The Courier," newsletter for the Northern Virginia Association of Historians, and newsclippings from Northern Virginia papers dated 1911-1970 collected by the Department of History at George Mason University.

Northern Virginia Oral History Project Collection - The Northern Virginia Oral History Collection contains 96 taped interviews of Northern Virginia residents. Transcripts or abstracts accompany most of the recordings. Topics such as agriculture, development, education, health, politics, transportation, and religion, with respect to Northern Virginia in the 19th and 20th centuries, are discussed.

Northern Virginia Civil War Images Collection - The Northern Virginia Images Collection in Special Collections & Archives, George Mason University Libraries, consists of nearly 200 images on various historical subjects in a variety of formats, including wood engravings, steel engravings, lithographs, chromolithographs, maps, and manuscripts. Most of the images are over fifty-years-old and many date from the Civil War.

Northern Virginia University Center Advisory Council Records, 1954-1957 - This collection contains papers and material owned by Clarence A. Steele relating to the Advisory Council to the Northern Virginia University Center, the predecessor to George Mason University.

Leonid M. Ozernoy Papers - Born in Moscow Ozernoy came to the United States in 1986. He worked at Boston University and Harvard University before coming to the Washington, D.C., area in the early 1990s to join NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland as a consultant. At George Mason, he taught courses in computational sciences and physics.

Sophocles Papas Papers - Sophocles Papas was an internationally known teacher of classical guitar. A Fairfax County resident later in his life, Papas taught the classical guitar in Washington, D.C. for nearly sixty years. He also taught at American University in Washington, D.C. Among his former students who have risen to fame are Charlie Byrd and Carlos Barbosa-Lima.

Partners for Livable Communities Collection - Partners for Livable Communities is a national, nonprofit organization working to restore and renew American communities by providing information, leadership and guidance that help communities help themselves. Collection contains planning reports, studies, theses, dissertations, policy proposals, books, magazine articles, meeting minutes, and congressional hearings on various aspects of urban planning and community development dating mostly from the 1970s and 1980s.

Stanford E. Parris Papers - Contains papers on Parris's term in the 93rd U.S. Congress as a Representative for the 8th district of Virginia. Materials include research files, campaign records, voting records, committee meeting minutes, bill files, and legislation as well as other documents dealing with his local, state, and national political career.

David Pass Papers - This collection contains research materials about new towns in the United States and internationally, particularly Sweden.

Edward M. Peach Historical Newspaper Collection - This collection contains selected newspapers, including the Evening Star, the New York Herald Tribune, the New York Times, the Egyptian Mail, and the French newspaper, Le Journal du Dumanche. Topics covered include the assassinations of John F. Kennedy and Robert Kennedy and the resignation of Richard Nixon.

Martha Pennino Papers - Martha Pennino was one of the longest-serving members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. her term spanning from 1967 to 1991. Collection documents Pennino's career on Fairfax County Board of Supervisors. Within the collection there are photographs, information from different projects that Martha Pennino worked on during her career and memorabilia that Martha Pennino collected during and after her career.

Arthur Peterson Papers - The collection contains materials relating to Peterson's long acting career. Types of materials include scripts to his television, film, and stage roles, correspondence, photographs, and props used by Peterson. Date range of materials is from the early 1940s to the late 1980s.

Frank Phillippi Watergate Collection - This collection contains archives related to Watergate. Includes manuscripts, correspondence, film, printouts, publications, subject files, and videotapes.

Pioneer America Society Archives - Papers of the Society, which deals with the history of northern Virginia, from 1967-1980. Includes correspondence, books, and pamphlets.

Planned Community Archives - The materials which comprise the Planned Community Archives Collection contain information on many planned communities in the United States, though collection emphasis has focused mainly on the planned community of Reston, Virginia. The collection documents the efforts of institutions, organizations,and individuals to develop new planned communities and to improve existing communities. Digital collection (Mason 2005) / Digital collection (WRLC 1995)

Plan for Alternative General Education (PAGE) Collection - Collection contains photographs, PAGE publications, articles on PAGE, and correspondence within PAGE, a program at George Mason University.

Porgy and Bess Poster Collection - Posters from the critically acclaimed revival of Porgy and Bess, which toured twenty-nine countries in North and South America and Europe from 1952-1956

Edgar A. Pritchard Papers - The papers include correspondence, legal, finance and other papers relating to Reston and Prichard's dealings with the Palindrome Corporation and Gulf Reston Incorporated.

Robert Prosky Papers - Consists of documents spanning Prosky's career in theatre, film, and television. Materials include playbills, photographs, scripts, reviews, fan letters, scrapbooks, and audiovisual.

Evelyn Pugh Papers - Materials from Dr. Evelyn L. Pugh (1930-1987), a faculty member in the Department of History at George Mason University from 1965 to 1987, detailing her study of John Stuart Mill and women's rights.

Arthur Raper Papers - Contains documents pertaining to the work of South Asia development expert Arthur Raper, including speeches, research and development project reports published by the Pakistan and Bangladesh Academies for Rural Development, Comilla and Peshawar; Asian Studies Center, Michigan State University; East-West Center Hawaii.

John Rapp, Jr. Photograph Collection - This collection contains nearly 200 negatives of family photographs in unknown locations. Some of the photographs are indoors and some are outdoors, some of individual girls, boys, men, and women and some of groups.

Reston Association Records - The Reston Association records include meeting minutes, budgets, clippings, reports, handbooks, correspondence, and general information on the association.

Reston Black Focus Collection - Collection consists of papers from the Reston Black Focus, such as correspondence, advertisements, financial information and general information. Also included in the collection is a series on the Reston Homeowners Association (RHOA) with papers and other information from the Association.

Reston Board of Commerce Records - Contains reports, plans, and proposals presented to the board. Also there are different types of publications such as brochures, flyers, booklets and articles dating from 1985 to 1996.

Reston Community Association Planning and Zoning Committee Records - The collection documents the time that John Dockery served on the Reston Community Association Planning and Zoning Committee.

Reston Founders Video History Collection - Contains interviews of various people including Reston's founder, Robert E. Simon. The interviews were recorded from 1989 to 1990.

Reston Garden Club Scrapbook Collection - Documents the club's activities and each scrapbook covers one year beginning with the founding of the Garden Club in 1970.

Reston Land Corporation Records - Collection documents the development of Reston, Virginia, by Reston Land Corporation, a subsidiary of Mobil Oil Corporation.

Reston Players Collection - Includes production and financial information regarding this Reston, VA -based non-profit theater group.

Reston Times Photograph Collection - Collection is comprised of negatives for photographs taken by various photo journalists working for the Reston Times.

Clarence J. Robinson Papers - Collection contains a scrapbook and photograph book, a personal property appraisal, a copy of Robinson's last will and testament, and a Robinson estate visitor's log.

Ruth Preston Rose Northen Virginia History Collection - An historian specializing in Northern Virginia, Ruth Preston Rose is the author of several articles and books.  The collection contains individual issues of local history newsletters, such as the Fireside Sentinel and Alexandria Chronicle; clippings; and many books on the history of Northern Virginia.

Roy Rosenzweig Papers - collection largely documents his research and writing through articles, notes, and correspondence on New York Central Park, Worcester (Mass.), labor, and digital humanities work.

Jack Rottier Photograph Collection - Collection features subjects such as United States presidents from Eisenhower to Ford, Pat Nixon, Lady Bird Johnson, Henr Kissenger, the National Mall, the Washington, D.C. Monuments, and Washington, D.C. aerial views.

Kjell Sandved Nature Photograph Collection - This collection contains thousands of natural history slides taken by nature photographer Kjell Sandved.

Arden B. Schell Watergate Collection - Materials dontaed by Arden B. Schell, a member of the research team for the House Judiciary Committee investigating the Watergate Affair. Contains publications, evidentiary notebooks, correspondence, transcripts, and notes.

Robert C. Schnitzer Papers - Robert C. Schnitzer (b. 1906) is a former actor, producer, educator, and theater administrator.  Included in the Robert C. Schnitzer Collection are textual materials, photographs, posters, newspaper clippings  working papers and other materials regarding Schnitzer's work.

Arthur E. Scott Photograph Collection - Collection of photographs and scrapbooks of Arthur E-Scott, U.S. Senate photohistorian from 1955-1975. Photograph Collections Website

William Lloyd Scott Papers - Contains records of Scott's career as a U.S. Senator of Virginia from 1967-1979, including reports, bills, hearings, campaign materials, appointment books, voting records, correspondence, publications, photographs, video tapes, and congressional research materials.

John P. Shacochis Papers - Materials include daily logs, correspondence, photographs, campaign materials, and reports from Shacochis' career with the Navy, Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, and various boards and committees he served on.

Robert E. Simon, Jr. Papers - Consists of newsclippings, promotional material and booklets relating t

o Reston. Also included are printed material, publications, scrapbooks, and his speeches and paperwork from various conferences he attended at different universities around the country.

Daniel D. Smith International School of Law Collection - This collection contains correspondence, reports, and notes documenting the International School of Law, now the George Mason University School of Law.

Ira E. Steele Recorded Sound Collection - A collection of 7" reel-to-reel audio tapes from the 1960s and 1970s, including an audio episode of Star Trek, various Republican party speeches, and stage performances by the Beatles, Johnny Cash and Elvis.

Francis C. Steinbauer Reston Planning and Development Collection - Francis Steinbauer was a key participant in the development of Reston through the first twenty years of its growth as a major new community in Northern Virginia. Collection contains materials pertaining to Reston history and development: photographs, sales information and manuals, master plans, reports, memoranda, and realia.

Eleanor L. Templeman Local History Collection - Materials used by northern Virginia historian Eleanor Lee Templeman to produce the books Northern Virginia Heritage and Arlington Heritage. Includes maps, drawings, negatives, pamphlets, and printing plates.

Theatre Recordings Collection - Contains 14 LP record albums of originial cast recordings. Some albums include pamphlets with descriptions of the plays as well as the text from the scripts. Many were created by the Theatre Recording Society and Columbia Records.

James S. Trefil Papers - Clarence J. Robinson Professor Dr. James S. Trefil is a physicist and a writer. Trefil is known for his many writings and for his interest in teaching science to nonscientists. The Trefil collection contains materials pertaining to his research and career, including correspondence, research notes, notes from courses both taken and taught, book manuscripts, and information pertaining to conferences he attended.

Jack Underhill Papers - Comprised of Underhill's personal papers accumulated while employed with the Department of Housing and Urban Development, the collection documents the Federal New Communities Program.

Charles A. Veatch Papers - A real estate development consultant, Veatch developed many residential and commercial projects throughout Northern Virginia. The Charles Veatch Collection contains working papers and other documents, newspaper clippings, brochures, maps, videorecordings, and books.

Lev Vekker Papers - This collection contains documents and correspondence pertaining to Vekker's work on the role of touch in consciousness.

Virginians for Dulles Records - A citizen action group seeking to reroute airline traffic in the interest of ecology and safety from Washington National Airport to Dulles International Airport in Loudoun County, Virginia. The collection contains minutes meeting agenda, correspondence between board members, financial and other administrative documents of the organization.

Virtual Library of Virginia Records - The VIVA Collection contains documents of the development and operations of the VIVA consortium from its founding in 1994 to 2002.

Edward Vitale Violin Music Collection - This collection contains manuscripts and published arrangements of 18th and 19th century violin music.

John N. Warfield Papers - Collection contains materials from Dr. Warfield's long and distinguished career in computers, engineering, and the study of complexity, including papers authored and co-authored by Warfield, presentations, video and audio tapes, and correspondence. Digital collection

Clark E. Warburton Papers - Joinng the Federal Deposit Insurance Company (FDIC) in 1934, Warburton eventually became Chief of the Banking and Business Section of the Division of Research and Statistics. Collection consists of correspondence, and manuscript material dating from the 1920s to the 1970s.

Warner Cable Reston Videotape Collection - Collection is comprised of programming generated by Warner Cable Communications regarding Reston, Virginia, and aired on the Warner Cable Community Access Channel.

Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts Records - Contains programs, brochures, newsclippings, architectural diagrams, correspondence, press releases, and poster schedules on Wolf Trap Park, the Filene Center, and the Barns at Wolf Trap.

John C. Wood Papers - This collection contains documents pertaining to Wood's career as mayor, including correspondence on the acquisition of land for George Mason College in the 1960s.

Works Progress Administration (WPA) Oral Histories Collection - This compilation contains oral interviews with persons who were associated in the 1930s with various Works Progress Administration WPA) projects. These include the Federal Art Project, Federal Music Project, and Federal Writers Project.
